Your new Bullmastiff Puppy

First Of All A Little Bullmastiff History...

Mastiff and Bullmastiff are two strong mastiffs of English origin, whose distant ancestors were used as dogs of war in Asia. The Mastiff was a long time the Dog in England, as well at the Lords as in the villages, where it was in charge of the repression of the banditism. The Bullmastiff was created more than 150 years ago, by crossing of Mastiff with an old type of Bulldog, this in order to have a dog anti-poacher, less corpulent than Mastiff, but faster. The breed was officially recognized only in 1924.

Mastiffs are large and heavy: a beautiful male can reach 80 cm at the shoulder and 100 kgs; the female is smaller but measurement all the same on average 70 cm for a weight of about 65 kilos. Bullmastiffs are more compact: from 63,5 to 68,5 cm at the shoulder for a weight from 50 to 59 kgs for the males, 61 to 66 cm at the shoulder and from 41 to 50 kgs for the females.

The two dogs have obviously a "air of family": strongly muscular, the turn of neck equalizes the height with the shoulder (a little less with the Mastiff), the turn of chest is often of the order of the meter at "the large ones", etc. The colours can be fawn-coloured or brindles with short hair but a dense undercoat which protects them well from the cold, the black mask and the severe eyes are particularly dissuasive... although makes some, these dogs usually have a completely friendly temperament, in particular with children.

The food poses only one problem of quantity... easy to solve with dry food.

Education is significant and it is essential to give them a good education and to let them know who is the 'leader' of the house and not let the dog take over!

In consideration of which, they are charming companions, putting up with limited spaces, much merrier than they do not have the air of it, and particularly dissuasive with their pace "with which want you to fight".

PAPERS OF YOUR BULLMASTIFF OR YOUR MASTIFF

When you come to seek your Mastiff or your Bullmastiff, the stockbreeder will give you:

* a CERTIFICATE OF SALE which will describe the pup and will mention the price. It is your invoice.

* the CHART Of IDENTIFICATION (known as CHART OF TATTOOING). The stockbreeder will give you a shutter A of the chart of tattooing and will return the shutter B to the SCC which will send the final chart Surtout to you, do not omit, in the event of change of address to make modify this chart of tattooing without delay.

* the NOTEBOOK OF VACCINATION.

* the CERTIFICATE OF BIRTH (pink). If your pup is very young, it is probable that the stockbreeder did not receive this document of the SCC yet. It will forward it to you a little later. While waiting, it can show you the doubles of the birth notification and the request for inscription of the range with the number of the file. This certificate of birth will be transformed into PEDIGREE when your dog is presented at the examination of CONFIRMATION.

Mastiff or Bullmastiff can be confirmed starting from the 15 month age (there is no higher age limit).

It will have to be presented at a judge or expert confirmator during an exposure. The SCC publishes each year the list of the canine demonstrations where it is possible to make confirm its dog. This list also appears in the bulletin of the Club.

The best means of keeping up to date with information concerning the race is to adhere to the official Club of Race which functions under the supervision of Canine Central company counsel by the Ministry for Agriculture.

THE VERMIFUGE AND VACCINES

Many are the pups infested by the worms. Your pup had to be vermifugé towards age the 3 weeks, 7 weeks and right before leaving the breeding. Many vermifuges exist: they are pest-destroying drugs, therefore it is not a question of alleviating substances. Your veterinary surgeon will say to you which to use.

The vermifugation must be repeated

every month up to 6/8 months, every 2 months then twice per annum.

For a bitch, one always needs vermifuger before a projection.

Your pup was vaccinated towards 7 to 8 weeks against:

the DISEASE OF CROSS-section, the CONTAGIOUS HEPATITE OF RUBARTH, Gastro-enteritis with PARVOVIRUS.

A recall must be carried out when the pup has 3 months.

Vaccination against the RAGE can be done only as from 3 months, also think of vaccination against the LEPTOSPIROSIS, or PIROPLASMOSIS (to be seen with your veterinary surgeon).

Every year, of the anti-rabic recalls will have to be carried out, as against the other diseases (the disease of Square is caught at any age). Your veterinary surgeon will establish you a CALENDAR OF VACCINATION.

It is advisable to avoid leaving the pup in the street, especially in the large cities, as long as it is not completely vaccinated. But as soon as the Veterinary surgeon gives you the green light, i.e. towards 3 months and half four months, leave - in the world to the maximum to make of it a sociable dog and which is not afraid of nothing.

CLEANLINESS

The concept of cleanliness exists in the dog: a normal dog will never make its needs where it sleeps you will have to learn how to him to do them outside, in the street or the garden. As in a little child, the sphincters of the pup are immature, and it cannot retain its pressing desires too a long time. It is thus useless, even traumatisant for the pup to want to too early inculcate concepts of cleanliness to him. On average, a dog is perfectly clean only around 5 months. You must have the newspapers in a part easy to clean (kitchen) contrary to the place where the pup sleeps. When it makes on these newspapers, congratulate it, reward it. The negative training, i.e. the punishment when it made at side, is absolutely not recommended. Gradually decrease the surface covered by the newspapers.

Often leave your dog (at least 5 times per day), after the meals and especially, as soon as it awakes and reward it if it makes its needs outside. Do not be afraid to show him your satisfaction.

If you leave it in the street, accustom it to go in the gutter. It is easy, and so much more pleasant for everyone.

CARE - GROOMING

The maintenance of grooming is extremely simple. Carry out a regular brushing with a rubber glove to eliminate the dead hairs, once per week is enough in general. In period of moult, brushings can be more frequent. A bath from time to time will be welcome.

Often check the cleanliness of the interior of the ears. There are products making it possible to clean them easily.

ARRIVAL AT The HOUSE

You decided to adopt a pup Mastiff or Bullmastiff. You chose it in the stockbreeder, and you will bring back it to the house. It is necessary to prepare its "CORNER A to him HIM", where it will be able to sleep, to take refuge. Do not forget that it has just left his mother, her brothers and s?urs, its éleveur(se), and you are for him completely unknown.

A large cushion, a mattress, must be reserved to him and placed in a quiet place (far from a door, of a staircase, neither in a draught, nor close to a radiator, the first being harmful and the second useless one). The place that you chose must be easy to clean: the pup is not yet clean! Proscribe the wicker baskets absolutely: they will not resist a long time the sharp-edged teeth of the pup.

You can give him toys, but avoid too requesting it the first days. Refuse the toys which tear and are likely to be swallowed per pieces, the teeth of a pup are always very pointed. Prefer with the rubber toys the bones in skin of buffalo (even if the dog swallows a piece of it, it is digestible), the Nylon toys.

Let it be acclimatized, avoid the round of the friends for exhiber your new pup.

OBEDIENCE

The pup Mastiff or Bullmastiff is more or less stirring up. it is natural that it makes some stupidities, it is with you to avoid the dramas: do not let trail your shoes, arrange your clothing. Gradually, you must learn how to him to obey.

It is not stupid and will include/understand prohibitions quickly: always employ the same word of refusal, move away it from what is prohibited to him, if need be, manage to him a small dissuasive slap (it makes very well the difference between a small snap when it made badly and a poke during a play).

Obedience is as obtained by rewards, moreover often more effective as the interdicts. A small piece of cheese, a caress when it has fact well are excellent means of making the pup conscious of what is allowed or not.

FOOD

Until 3 weeks of age, the pup received for any food only the milk of his/her mother. Around three weeks it took its first meal. At 6 weeks, it is completely separated.

The industrial food, in the form of croquettes, certainly is adapted best for the dogs. It avoids the innumerable food errors made by the owners: to establish a feed ration is not easy thing if one wants that it is balanced, moreover, it is not practical for a dog of the format of our Mastiffs and our Bullmastiffs.

Contrary to a "human" concept, the dogs do not need change in their food. Several marks of croquettes are completely adapted to our great races but do not choose them randomly.

According to the age of the pup, of its way of life, you will establish with the stockbreeder or with your veterinary surgeon which type of croquettes is appropriate. The croquettes constitute a complete and dehydrated feedingstuff. It is thus useless, even dangerous in the long run, to add vitamins or rock salt, the croquettes "special pup of large race" contain already calcium necessary). The dog must always have fresh and specific water to its provision. a dog nourished with the croquettes drinks obviously more than one receiving dog of fresh food containing of water.
